Atom economy of fermentation
Ethanol is made by fermenting glucose: C6H12O6 → 2C2H5OH + 2CO2. M(C6H12O6) = 180.18 g mol−1 and M(C2H5OH) = 46.08 g mol−1. What is the atom economy for making ethanol? [1]
- 25.6 %
- 48.9 %
- 51.1 %
- 104.7 %
Show the answer and the reasoning
Answer: C. C is correct. Atom economy = mass of desired product ÷ total mass of reactants × 100 = (2 × 46.08) ÷ 180.18 × 100 = 51.1 %. A counts only one ethanol. B is the share that ends up as CO2. D divides by the mass of the other product instead of the reactants; an atom economy above 100 % is impossible.
