Conserving a species where it grows
A rare species of orchid now grows wild at only three sites, all in chalk grassland. Which measure is an example of in situ conservation of this orchid? [1]
- Grazing the grassland at the three sites so that shrubs do not grow up and shade out the orchids
- Collecting seeds from the wild plants and storing them, dried and frozen, in a seed bank
- Growing plants from seed in the glasshouses of a botanic garden
- Keeping samples of orchid tissue alive in sterile culture in a laboratory
Show the answer and the reasoning
Answer: A. In situ conservation protects a species in its natural habitat. Grazing keeps the grassland open, so the orchids stay where they grow naturally, along with the other species they interact with. B, C and D are all ex situ: the seed bank stores germ plasm, the botanic garden keeps living plants away from their habitat, and tissue culture keeps cells in a laboratory. These are valuable back-ups, but none of them protects the wild population or its habitat.
