Reading binomial names
The lion is Panthera leo, the tiger is Panthera tigris and the cheetah is Acinonyx jubatus. What can be deduced from these names? [1]
- The lion and the tiger belong to the same species.
- The lion and the cheetah belong to the same genus.
- The second part of each name identifies the genus.
- The lion and the tiger belong to the same genus.
Show the answer and the reasoning
Answer: D. In a binomial name the first part (capital letter) is the genus and the second part (lower case) distinguishes the species. Lion and tiger share the genus name Panthera. A is wrong because their second names differ, so they are different species. B is wrong because the cheetah is in a different genus, Acinonyx. C reverses the rule: the genus is the first part.
