Groups in a painkiller
Paracetamol has the structure HO–C6H4–NH–CO–CH3. Which functional groups does it contain? [1]
- Carboxyl, amino and phenyl
- Hydroxyl, amido and phenyl
- Alkoxy, amino and phenyl
- Hydroxyl, amino and aldehyde
Show the answer and the reasoning
Answer: B. B is correct. –OH on the ring is a hydroxyl group, –NH–CO– is an amido group (amide link) and –C6H4– is a benzene ring (phenyl). A: there is no –COOH; the O–H and C=O are on different atoms. C: alkoxy would be C–O–C. D: the N is bonded to a C=O, which makes it amido, and there is no –CHO.
